Claudia Bakker

Claudia Bakker was born and lives in Rio de Janeiro. One of her main influences was her close partnership with the artist Lygia Pape, who was a big motivator of her work.
In the 1990´s she frequented the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage and in 2001 finished a master in Communication and Technology of the Image at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro School of Communication - ECO/UFRJ.
Her research "Land Art and Installations as strategies of protection of space before the virtuality of images in the 20th Century" was a result of the sensible experiences carried out by the artist in nature. Through the concept of Gestell, developed by the philosopher Martin Heidegger, she experienced a deeper contact with philosophy, and this would reflect in her installations during the period of 1998/1999.
The first installation carried out by Claudia was at the Açude Museum in Rio de Janeiro, where she placed 900 apples in a fountain of natural water in 1994. The phototexts, which are connected to the installations, represent her more significant production, where she works the images [records] that are made from the installations.
Be it with texts, poetic references extracted from scripts that precede the installation and sometimes numbers that symbolize the extensions, numerical relations of quantities and time inscribed upon the images, the artist has Time as question and uses, like in the Cabbala, numbers that are visible but guard the mystery of the images.
The repertoire of materials, at times, repeats itself and in others, intercalates. Apples, books, films in super 8 and 16mm, voil, paint, sand and clocks are part of those images, that survive time after it has created a relationship with space. From the installation Nocturnal Spring carried out in 2007, in the project Breathing, at the Eva Klabin Foundation, Claudia creates organic drawings made with sowing lines on fabric. In 2009 she developed, in partnership with the fashion designer Luiza Marcier, an sowed drawings series and a dress that were shown in the Gallery Mercedes Viegas in the Collective 09.
Some of the most representative critics and curators of the Brazilian artistic scene such as Adolfo Montejo Navas, Fernando Cocchiarale, Kátia Canton, Luiz Camillo Osório, Luisa Duarte, Luiza Interlenghi, Marcio Doctors and Paulo Reis have already written about her. She did individual exhibitions in important institutions such as Paço Imperial and has works in private and public collections, with special attention to the ones of Gilberto Chateaubriand in MAM/Rio de Janeiro, Joaquim Paiva and João Sattamini.

The Italian art critic, Luccila Sacca, talks about her work in Brazilian Vanguard and I Mined Italiani in "Brazil: Segni d' art Supports and Video 1950/ 1993 - Querina Stampalia Biennial of Venice/ Italy.
She has pictures published in the Catalogue of the 23rd Biennial of São Paulo Universalis/ 1996, on the work of the artist Arthur Barrio.
